Older men and women experience abuse differently.

Men are more likely to perpetuate abuse but less likely to report abuse when it happens to them.

Abuse of older women is more likely to be the continuation of domestic violence.

The subject of gender-based elder abuse has received relatively little research in Australia and internationally.

This webinar will feature Catherine Barrett from the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society who will present her research findings on sexual assault experienced by older women and Gary Ferguson from Senior Rights Victoria who will highlight elder abuse among men, which in some jurisdictions accounts for 25% of the cases reported.

Catherine Barrett will highlight factors that make older women more vulnerable to sexual assault than older men and the implications of such abuse.

Gary Ferguson will outline why men are less inclined to report abuse until the situation is critical, which make the task of addressing the abuse harder.
